"In fact it's better that we don't say any more about him." -Daniil Kharms, from Incidences

To Be Alone

Joanna woke up to her death, but quickly revived, without noticing what had happened. Carlos ate his usual scrambled egg and toast breakfast, and suddenly died, his face falling into the food, but also revived, and wiped his face with his napkin. He wondered when it was that he began to eat so messily. Connor died on his way down his building’s staircase, and revived to a broken arm, and he couldn’t help but think that he had been growing clumsier slowly and steadily as he aged. Melinda died as she was applying lipstick to her lips, and revived to find a streak across her cheek to her ear. She liked it so much that she made another streak on her other cheek, to her ear. Gilbert got into a rear-ending car accident, because he died as the stoplight turned red. His main concern was his insurance rates increasing, not his just-then death, and his many-impending deaths. This happens daily to all of us, and we never seem to worry much about our just-then or our many-impending deaths.
